Slow Me Down, Lord

“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he [Jesus] said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'”1

Or as someone else has said, “Come apart and rest a while before you come apart!”

I remember years ago having the following saying on a card on my desk, “Beware of the barrenness of a busy life!” I think in our day and age so many of us struggle with being too busy. I certainly do. It is a constant battle.

What’s the Purpose of … the Church?

The difference between a casual fan and a diehard fan

The difference between a casual fan and a diehard fan is similar to the difference between those who are desperate for Jesus and those who are not. It shouldn’t matter who is teaching or what songs are sung as long as Jesus is honored and celebrated. Jesus isn’t interested in people who will follow Him only if everything is just right. He loves us regardless, of course. But let’s not delude ourselves into thinking that the casual approach many take to following Jesus is true discipleship. He isn’t lucky to have us. He’s not blessed by our weekly attendance at a ninety-minute worship service; He doesn’t need the twenty dollars we throw into the offering plate. There are people dying for their faith around the world. People in the poorest parts of the world gather together in the face of opposition without coffee or convenient parking.

I once heard Francis Chan say that the book of Acts with his least favorite book of the Bible, because rather than anyone in America read the account of the birth an expansion of the early church and said, “Wow that is just like my church.” Because the disparity between the early church and the 21st Century American churches so great, we have to resign ourselves to the idea “that was then” and come up with reasons why that stuff doesn’t happened today. Francis made the point that the early church was unstoppable–– in the face of persecution, torture, imprisonment, it continued to grow. Nothing could stop it. But the church today is very stoppable. Just change the service times or worship styles or teaching methods, and people will church shop elsewhere. We have lost any sense of desperation that it all hinges on Jesus and that unless he shows up we are done for.

We Are In A World Made By Rules Created By An Intelligence

Michio KakuI have concluded that we are in a world made by rules created by an intelligence. Believe me, everything that we call chance today won’t make sense anymore. To me it is clear that we exist in a plan which is governed by rules that were created, shaped by a universal intelligence and not by chance.
